About:
Alesha Chellam

Educator | Artist | Founder of Artful Journeys

Art wasn’t a break from learning, it was the bridge. For over 17 years, I taught Pre-K and Kindergarten, where math, reading, and science bloomed through brushstrokes and storytelling. In my world, intellect and imagination are partners. That belief lives on in Artful Journeys: a space where young artists explore, express, and grow with their whole selves.

My relationship with journaling began in middle school in the 1980s, when I first started documenting my thoughts, sketches, and questions about the world. I still have those journals today, and when I flip through the pages, I can still see that little girl, her wandering observations, her restless ideas, her early artistic instincts. Some elements remain unchanged, woven into the fabric of my work even now. Others have evolved, pivoted, transformed.

Those journals remain living archives a blueprint of becoming, a record of spirit in motion. They are the quiet foundation of all that I create, as an artist, educator, and documentarian of memory.

I’ve co-created community murals in Houston with children and teens, translating their voices into public works that honor identity and place. Commissioning partners include the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; City of Houston Parks & Recreation; and the Community Artists Collective.

My creative journey has carried me across the globe from the vibrant studios of Nairobi to the tangled colors of Jamaica. Mexico offered the bold pulse of color and earth the kind that lives in murals and markets, in handwoven stories told by its people.

My sister and I walked the honeyed light of Paris, where artists sip memory from morning cafés. I’ve stood at the worn stone thresholds of Venice, where time whispers through cracked frescoes and ancient cathedrals. In Rome, amid the city's restless beauty, my eyes took in an ancient skyline stitched with modern life, our apartment facing one castle, and across the street, another famous ruin. And in Vatican City, I stood beside my mother and sister, enveloped by the hush and grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica.

In London, the brush of wind off the Thames, the hush within the Tate’s towering halls, it wrote itself into every page I carried home.

At the heart of my current work I’m fascinated with ontology and the physiognomy of self-portraits, how identity takes form not only in likeness but in memory, perception, and inherited rhythm. That exploration gave rise to two ongoing series: Self-Portrait Series – Introspective studies exploring the layers of perception, identity, and emotional topography. Historical Genealogy Series – A visual journey tracing my family’s lineage from the 1700s to now, honoring legacy, resilience, and quiet strength.

At the center of it all is journaling: not a polished product, but an act of inquiry. A form of emotional cartography. Every child’s scribble, pause, and breakthrough is part of their artistic evolution—a witness to who they are and who they are becoming.

Artful Journeys is more than mentorship. It’s a movement. A practice. A passage into self-discovery.
